QUICK ANALYSIS
Gadget ownership among US college students rises to almost 7 (6.9 to be precise) devices per student in 2013 up from 5.4 devices in 2012.
Laptops are the #1 choice of device with 85% of students owning a laptop.
Smartphones (69%) edge out video game consoles (68%) while feature phones are now owned by only 33% of students.
Tablet ownership (36%) still lags behind TV ownership (60%).
More devices, however, does not translate to more dependance on technology.Inside class rooms, 79% students still prefer to use pen and paper to take notes.
49% students admit to using a second screen when watching TV. But the behaviour is more ritualistic and relaxed where the TV plays in the background while students seem to do nothing specific on the second device.
63% of students check Facebook or Twitter and 58% browse the internet on a separate device while watching TV. Less than 20% are engaged in activity directly related to the TV content.
In a previous post, I pointed out that the top 3 spending categories for US College Students in 2013 are food, cars and clothes. While technology is important, it still has a long way to go before it occupies the same space as restaurants, road trips and shopping in a student's life.
